On the origin of gold

Where did the gold in your jewelry originate? No one is completely sure. The relative average abundance in our Solar System appears higher than can be made in the early universe, in stars, and even in typical supernova explosions. Some astronomers have recently suggested that neutron-rich heavy elements such as gold might be most easily made in rare neutron-rich explosions such as the collision of neutron stars. Pictured above is an artist's illustration depicting two neutron stars spiraling in toward each other, just before they collide. Since neutron star collisions are also suggested as the origin of short duration gamma-ray bursts, it is possible that you already own a souvenir from one of the most powerful explosions in the universe.

Chimp And Baby Tiger Like Mother And Son

It was at Thailand’s Samut Prakan Crocodile Farm and Zoo when something adorable yet bizarre occurred. At the resort, which is 25 miles south-east of Bangkok, a two-year-old chimpanzee was feeding a baby tiger, named Aorn, from a bottle of milk. The female chimp, named Do Do, looked like a real mother to the tiger cub nestling in her arms.

At one point it even looks like Do Do is testing out the milk to check that it’s OK for Aorn to drink it. (Then again, she could also just be acting on an impulse to drink milk, as chimpanzees are highly impulsive.) The crocodile farm where these two cuties are situated is the largest in Thailand, housing 80,000 crocodiles, as well as other species of animals such as monkeys, tigers, elephants, lions, horses and hippopotamuses.
But never has such love and care been found between two very different animal species at this zoo. Maybe the unlikely pair will grow up together and forever have this mother-child relationship shared between them. Hey, we can dream can’t we?

We’ll be sure to keep you updated about the progress of these two. Little TBR prediction for ya: the baby tiger will eventually outgrow his mother and snip at her. He is a tiger after all, and tigers tend to have problems getting along with other mammals for any length of time. This baby tiger might love his chimp mother to pieces right now, but he’ll eventually want to rip her into little pieces of juicy flesh. Hey, if you’re a tiger, you gotta eat, and the Brussels sprout growing on a stalk near your cage just isn’t gonna cut it. Well, anyway, if you’re a “bonding fan,” check out these soldiers, small puppies and kittens bonding in almost the same way; they seem inseparable.

What is that?

Steampunk

Steampunk is a sub-genre of science fiction, fantasy, alternate history, and speculative fiction that came into prominence during the 1980s and early 1990s. Steampunk involves a setting where steam power is still widely used—usually Victorian era Britain—that incorporates elements of either science fiction or fantasy. Works of steampunk often feature anachronistic technology or futuristic innovations as Victorians may have envisioned them, based on a Victorian perspective on fashion, culture, architectural style, art, etc. This technology may include such fictional machines as those found in the works of H. G. Wells and Jules Verne. Other examples of steampunk contain alternative history-style presentations of such technology as lighter-than-air airships, analog computers, or such digital mechanical computers as Charles Babbage and Ada Lovelace's Analytical engine. Various modern utilitarian objects have been modded by individual artisans into a pseudo-Victorian mechanical "steampunk" style, and a number of visual and musical artists have been described as steampunk.

Salty liquorice

Salty liquorice, salmiak or salmiakki is a variety of liquorice that gets its name from the relatively large amount of sal ammoniac (Latin traditional name for ammonium chloride, a salt of ammonia) that it contains in addition to the liquorice root extract, sugar and starch or gum arabic that constitute regular liquorice. Ammonium chloride has a spicy taste that vaguely resembles that of sodium chloride (table salt) with a hint of ammonia smell. Salty liquorice does not necessarily contain any sodium since salt refers to the salt of ammonia and not to table salt (sodium chloride). Although some types of regular liquorice may also contain a small amount of ammonium chloride, salty liquorice can contain up to about 8 percent of ammonium chloride. Moreover, the salty taste is typically less masked by a high sugar content compared to regular liquorice. Salty liquorice candies are almost always black or very dark brown and can range from very soft to very hard and may be brittle. The other colours used are white and variants of grey. Carbon black is used as a food colouring agent in these candies

Gigantic Yellow Rabbit Chillin’ In Sweden

What on earth has happened here? Has a gigantic toy fallen from the heavens? Or are we gazing at the Big Yellow Rabbit of Örebro in Sweden? This gargantuan yellow rabbit is both hated and loved by citizens of Sweden.

Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman is the man behind this sculpture; he created it for the annual OpenArt biennale. He is also the man behind the great Flip-Flop Monkey, which was on display at the Pixelshow 2010 conference in Sao Paulo. The 50 ft high yellow rabbit cost $20,000 to build and is made entirely of wood, making it vulnerable to termites. Tourists and fans visit Sweden from all over the world just to see the rabbit and photograph it. It’s simply spectacular!
Yes, this giant rabbit is real, and it's spectular! At least that's what Sidra Holland told me.
Do you feel compelled to climb to the top of this rabbit? Maybe there's a pot of gold or some other surprise at the tippy-top.

"I'm not turning around! There's no giant, yellow rabbit behind me! Don't be stupid!"
"Stop telling me to turn around! A giant yellow rabbit? Whoever heard of such a thing!"
"Ok, maybe there is a huge rabbit behind me, but I don't know how to turn around."
Chief rabbit inspector Billiam Hornesberry surveys the scene.
Mr. Hornesberry points out another giant rabbit off in the distance. Yes, this city is filled with rabbit sculptures.
Now, if only I could have one of these babies in my backyard. As a matter of fact, we should all have these in our backyards.
